Within Wicca, the common candle colour meanings are: White for general purposes, Black for protection, Yellow/Orange/Gold/Red for solar/masculine energies, Silver for lunar/feminine energies, Brown for grounding, Green for growth, Purple for wisdom, Indigo for balance, Blue for water/harmony, Grey candles neutrality/balance/protection/peace/spiritual wisdom, Pink for love and romance.
One must bear in mind that candle colour meanings are as diverse as the hundreds of rituals that require the use of one or more candles. From the vibrant reds of passion and love to the calming blues of clarity and serenity, the colours of candles hold a lot of significance in the world of candle magic. Interestingly, each hue carries its own unique energy that can be harnessed to aid you in manifesting your intention(s).
Most practitioners of Candle Magic prefer to use candles that have the colour fully (i.e. solid) throughout the candle (often known as 'Witches Candles'). This type of candle is considered by many to be superior when compared to 'dipped' candles which are white candles dipped in a particular colour giving a coloured coating, but of course remaining solid white underneath.
How to Cast a Candle Spell
The following steps are suitable for those wishing to explore Candle Magic for the first time. As you gain in experience, you will discover many other ways to cast a Candle Spell.
If you have a sacred place, this can be an excellent place in which to conduct your spell. What qualifies as 'sacred' is entirely up to you; it might be out in your garden, in your living room, or somewhere else you find peaceful and meaningful.
Step 1 - Intention
Clearly define and focus upon your desire or intention. Understand what you wish your intended spell to achieve or manifest.
It is important to maintain your concentration during this step. If your concentration is broken, it is better to stop, and retry the following day.
Step 2 - Gather
Once you have clarified your vision, assemble candles, herbs, and any other materials you believe reflect that vision. These could be items that carry specific magical properties, or they could just be things you find meaningful or aesthetically pleasing.
Step 3 - Select
Select the candle colour that corresponds to your intention. If required, you can choose a white candle and anoint it with oils or inscribe it with symbols or a personal sigil.
Step 4 - Prepare
Cleanse the area of any negative energy with sage or similar. Cast a circle.
Cleanse your candle by passing it through sage or incense smoke, sprinkle with salt, or holding it under running water.
Step 5 - Anoint (optional)
Anoint your candle with an appropriate oil that corresponds to your intention.
Rub the oil onto the candle from the bottom to top to help expel anything you wish to get rid of (e.g.; stress, money issues, etc.) outward while concentrating on your goal.
Rub the candle from top to bottom to attract what you wish to attract to yourself (e.g.; money, new friends etc.).
Step 6 - Light
Light the candle and say a heartfelt affirmation or chant related to your intention. Visualise your intended outcome as if it has already been achieved.
Step 7 - Focus
Concentrate your energy and intention on the flame of the candle. Feel the energy building as you focus.
Step 8 - Burn
Allow your candle to burn for a specific amount of time as determined by yourself. Alternatively, until it naturally extinguishes itself. As it burns, imagine your intention being released into the universe.
Step 9 - Disposal
If you have any leftover wax, ashes, or remnants, you can either bury them in the earth, scatter them in moving water, or keep them as a reminder of your intention.
Step 10 - Closedown
Thank the universe, or any deities or spirits you invoked during the spell. Close the spell with genuine gratitude, trusting that your intention is on its way to manifestation.
Throughout all the above steps, the primary driver is your intent, needless to say that this intent should be positive.
A Shared Thought
Tamsin, a member of our Curious Goods Team shares a little about her thoughts on Candle Colour Correspondences:
I personally always like to choose a relevant candle colour when spell-working.
In my opinion, this adds an additional element to the casting. Whilst not strictly necessary since a white candle will suffice if you find yourself without the appropriate colour candle to hand.
Our ancestors whatever they could get, and was not able to access the wide range of options available to us these days.
My personal list of colour correspondences are as follows:
- Black - Protection
- Blue - Healing, Peace
- Brown - Grounding
- Gold - The 'God'
- Green - Abundance
- Orange - Success
- Purple - Spiritual Awareness/Connection
- Red - Passion
- Silver - The 'Goddess'
- White - Cleansing
- Yellow - Happiness, Positivity
